To suggest that this terrible illness, which is robbing my father of his memory and autonomy, might somehow be a "boon" to his personhood is completely outrageous. I can hardly believe that anyone would so insensitive as to imply that someone like my dad is "more fortunate" in *any* way than those of us who are not afflicted with dementia.    I do not believe my father's illness is some divine message, nor do I choose to think of it as a character-building exercise for me or anyone else who loves him.
